Alarming proportion of minor kidnap heightens tension among parents, guardians

– Minor kidnap raises tension among parents, guardians

– Police assures of safety, regardless of the situation across the country

Ese Oruru was finally reunited with her family some days ago.

The recent spate of kidnap in the country has heightened tension in Nigeria as many have now started panicking over the safety of lives and properties.

Recently, there were reported cases of forceful abduction of teenagers, a situation which got a lot of Nigerians wondering if the security agencies in the country were really up to the task of securing the citizens.

But, the kidnap of three students at the Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu, Lagos, last week, seemed to cap an already troubled season for concerned and worried parents.

Although the girls have been rescued by officers of the Nigerian police, the fact that they could be kidnapped inside their school compound drew widespread criticisms from observers and parents whose children were kidnapped and also those who have kids in other schools.

This also leaves the fear that from any part of the country, the kidnappers can strike anytime and anywhere.

Perusal has it that the kidnapping saga, at the initial stage, was associated with militancy because it started in the Niger Delta region. It was generally misconstrued as a reaction to the degradation of the environment in the process of oil exploration and exploitation.

The primary targets and constant preys were the foreign nationals, working with oil companies which routinely paid ransom to get their staff released. The general impression was that those involved resorted to kidnapping to get their own share of the oil wealth.

But today, the abduction of people for ransom has for long ceased to be a Niger Delta experience only instead, it has scaled boundaries, spread and is entrenching into many states.

Practically everywhere is under the menace of kidnap, as it has also become a major insecurity problem in the country.

Some women rights activists who pleaded anonymity told Kullove.com’s David Oladele, that the alarming proportion of kidnapping should be blamed on the high rate of unemployment and economic melt down facing the country.

Obe of them said: “It is regrettable that Nigeria attained the unenviable status of being one single country that accounted for 25 per cent of global kidnapping in the year 2015.”

Investigation has shown that Nigeria has recorded over five major abduction cases, including the three students of Babinton Macaulay Junior Seminary (BMJS), Ikorodu, Lagos, barely after sixty days in the year 2016.

Ifedayo Badmus, the Lagos Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), told Kullove.com that such a terrible case had never happened before.

“This is the new system of criminality in Lagos. It’s because the waterways and land are tight against sort. They want to use the sure target . But since the police have also discovered it. They are already setting up their game against such criminality,” she noted.

She urged the members of the public to be vigilant and cooperate with the security agencies, adding that they should not hesitate to report any act of criminality in their community to the police station nearest to them.

Meanwhile, Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has the controversial abduction of Ese Oruru by Yunusa Dahiru, aka Yellow from Bayelsa to Kano state.

Professor Soyinka and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana who spoke on Sunday, March 6, at a press conference in Lagos, condemned those masking Ese’s abduction with religion, saying the perpetrator should be prosecuted so the victim could get justice.
